Chicago Parent - Parents Know Best

From peanuts to dairy to seafood, chances are you or your kids know someone with a food allergy. For those who have a gluten allergy, food options can be difficult to find, especially when it comes to traditional sweets (no regular flour allowed). Chicago-based Whole Bakers aims to satisfy everyone’s sweet tooth, however, with their gluten-free cookies.

When we first opened up the samples Whole Bakers sent to our office, we were skeptical. They looked good, but could gluten-free cookies really taste good, too? As we found out, they certainly can. We were able to try each of the company’s six varieties, Sugar Drop, Lemon Shortie, Chewy Choco Bite, Rockin Choco Chip, Ginger Joy and Snicker Do, and they all got rave reviews. We may not have anyone here in the office with a gluten allergy, but we certainly didn’t feel like we were missing anything eating these cookies. For this chocoholic, nothing beats the Chewy Choco Bite, which tastes like a mini brownie, but there really wasn’t a bad flavor in the bunch. And for containing all-natural ingredients, they maintained their soft texture for the entire week we had them in the office. Considering how good they were, I’m surprised they even lasted that long.

Whole Bakers Gluten-Free Cookies are available to order by calling (773) 742-1834 or visiting www.wholebakers.com. They cost $2.95 for two, $8.50 for six and $16.75 for a baker’s dozen (prices do not include shipping). Due to popular demand, the bakery is moving to a new, larger manufacturing plant in Chicago, so new orders may take a little longer than usual. We think they’re worth the extra wait, though.
